Gwendolyn Chambers Mohay December 3, 1925 - June 26, 2020

Mrs. Mohay was born 12/3/1925 to Neina (Keck) Chambers and John Stuart Chambers both of Springfield, IL.  She went to St. Catherine’s Nursing School in East Chicago as an Army Cadet where she served as class President.   On November 20, 1948 she married John George Mohay of Springfield, IL.  They moved to Notre Dame University where her husband pursued a Law Degree.  Changing gears they traveled east with a family of 3 to Virginia where her husband completed his degree at Georgetown University graduating with a Bachelors in Political Science and with a family of 5.   Gwen worked in the emergency room, delivery room and surgical floors at St. Joseph Hospital (Springfield, IL), Georgetown University (Washington, DC) and Arlington Hospital (Arlington, VA) where she established a state-of-the art surgical floor, and retired as a head nurse.

After retirement Mrs. Mohay traveled the world with her husband for his work visiting countries like Australia, New Zealand, Figi Islands, Denmark, East and West Germany, etc. She attended the Whitehouse Valentines Dance hosted by President Carter and First Lady Roslyn, and attended the first Inaugural Ball for President Regan and First Lady Nancy.  Prior to moving to Haverhill, MA she resided in Leesburg, VA, Bentonville, VA, Vienna VA and Fall Church, VA.

Mrs. Mohay is preceded in death by her husband, John G. Mohay, her parents, her brother John Chambers, sisters, Maxine Fauber, Rosemary Walsh, Patricia Miller, and Sarah Kuchar, her sons Karl C. Mohay and infant Luke Mohay.  She is survived by 6 children:  John W. Mohay (PA), Mark Mohay (VA), Kurt Mohay (CO), Nina McGarry (MD), Matt Mohay (VA), Therese Mohay (MA), daughter-in-law Wendy Mohay, and many nieces and nephews.

Her family brought her smiles, laughs and much happiness.   She loved receiving emails with pictures of her grandchildren and their many adventures, jobs and accomplishments.   She is survived by 12 grandchildren:   Alicia Lange and her husband Jeremy (NC), Brian McGarry (CA), Mark M. Mohay (VA), Kyle Mohay (VA), Brittany Nadir and her husband Shay (VA), Mary Mohay (FL), Justin Mohay (VA), Jacklyn Mohay (CA), Miles Mohay and his wife Theresa (NC), Gwen Vannoy and her husband Charlie (VA), Luke West (MA), and John Mohay (NC).

Her biggest joy and entertainment were the visits, pictures, video clips and stories of her 11 precious great-grandchildren:  Nyx Lange, Pablo Lange, Cora Mohay, Evelyn Mohay, Scarlett Vannoy, Sofia Nadir, Gwendolyn Vannoy and Najaf Nadir, Jack Mohay, Audrey Vannoy and Daniyal Nadir.

Mrs. Mohay was an avid sports fan of the Washington Capitals Hockey Team, the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs Baseball Teams, and the Washington Redskins.  She was an excellent golfer and bowler and won may trophies throughout her years of playing.  As life slowed, her interests turned to playing Solitaire on her Ipad, doing word puzzles, and watching old Westerns on TV.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. James Church, Winter Street, Haverhill on August 1, 2020 at 12:00 Noon. Mrs. Mohay will be laid to rest with her husband, at the Quantico Military Cemetery in Quantico, VA. Arrangements are by the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers and plants Mrs. Mohay has requested donations be made to the St. James Santa’s Helper program where children are guaranteed a wonderful Christmas.  Donations can be made to: Santa’s Helper Program @ St. James Church 6 Cottage Street, Haverhill, MA, 01830.
