HAVERHILL – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John J. Abromovitch, 89, husband of Elizabeth (O’Brien) Abromovitch of Haverhill. He passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9 at his home surrounded by family. He and Betty celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past November.
John was born in Haverhill, the son of Joseph and Sophie (Zemetris) Abromovitch. He was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1953 and received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Southern Illinois University and was a standout lineman for SIU Football. John, aka, “Mr. A” was the Physical Education teacher in the Haverhill school system for 37 years, spending most of his tenure at JG Whittier Middle School. He was the Haverhill High Golf Team coach for 16 years, achieving State Championships as well as individual State Champion honors. He was a longtime member at Far Corner Golf Course and earned several club championships.
He enjoyed vacationing in Aruba for over 35 years as well as other warm destinations. He loved spending time with his family and supported his children and grandchildren whether they were on the basketball or volleyball court, the pool, or the ice rink, as well as theatre. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
John is survived by his wife Elizabeth (O’Brien) Abromovitch of Haverhill, his children Sally Driscoll and her husband Richard of Bradford, Christine Rodgers and her husband Kenneth of Bradford, John P. Abromovitch and his wife Kathleen (Greenwood) of Haverhill and Kate Abromovitch of Stratford, Connecticut and Haverhill. He also leaves behind his brother Richard Abromowicz and his wife Ksenia of Weymouth as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Abromovitch. He leaves his ten grandchildren Erin Hamilton, Sean Driscoll, Meaghan Driscoll, Devin Rodgers, Kevin Rodgers and his wife Maggie, Cory Abromovitch, Cameron Abromovitch, Reece Haft-Abromovitch, Madison Haft-Abromovitch, and Cole Haft-Abromovitch. He also leaves three great grandchildren Lincoln Hamilton, Lola Hamilton and Laurel Rodgers.
We would also like to recognize the compassionate care shown by Teodora and Eileen of Merrimack Valley Hospice/Tufts Medicine Care at Home Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, January 14 from 4PM until 7PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. A Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 15 at 11AM at Sacred Hearts Church, South Main St., Bradford. Internment will be private.
