LAWRENCE – Elvira M. (Alvarez) Vega, 88 of Lawrence passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025 at the High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill.

Elvira was born in Havana, Cuba on January 6, 1937; she was the daughter of Felippe and Felina (Cabrera) Alvarez and was the youngest of their eleven children. After leaving on the last, legal plane from Cuba in 1972, Elvira worked at various jobs including the Miami Police Department, a local box company and Thom McAn Shoes; and most of all she enjoyed being a homemaker. She was a great cook, enjoyed dancing, music and day trips to Newburyport. Elvira was full of wisdom and a woman of strong faith, always giving of herself – she was known as the “Dear Abby” of her family. She will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, sister, grandmother and aunt.

Elvira is survived by her daughter Rita Vega and wife Susan Vachon of Atkinson, NH, her son Emilio Vega and wife Ivis Rodriguez of Seabring, FL, and her sister Idilia “Lilia” Alvarez-Cabrera of Havana, Cuba. She also leaves behind her grandson Alejandro Vega of Lowell and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Justo Emilio Vega.

To Rita and Susan & the entire Vega family. Brian and I are so sorry for your loss. Heaven is gaining a wonderful woman and child of God. She will be so full of joy in heaven and one day you will see her that way again, like she had.when she danced and sang, and ever more so. This is a beautiful and stunning picture of Maria. I used to live sitting with her at the Christmas parties. She has such a welcoming way and a warm and loving heart. We spoke different languages but it was still comfortable being with her. Her smile was like sunshine. May her beautiful soul and all the great memories keep you smiling til you see her again.
