Haverhill – Gretchen R. (Behringer) Schofield, 84, wife of the late Donald F. Schofield, passed away October 7, 2021 at home while happily tending her garden.

Born in Erie, PA, she was the daughter of the late Clarence F. and Rose A. (Humm) Behringer. She was predeceased by her brother, William J. Behringer. Gretchen was raised and educated in Erie, where she attended Mill Creek School. She furthered her education at Seton Hill College and then obtained her Master’s Degree from Fitchburg State College in teaching. She taught elementary school in the Haverhill School System at the Tilton, Moody and Bartlett Schools for many years before retiring in 1997. She also taught in the Department of Defense in Newfoundland, Canada, Germany and Italy. Gretchen pursued a variety of interests including reading, gardening, quilting, canning, creating gourmet meals and travelling. She traveled all seven continents and went around the world on a freighter. Gretchen welcomed six exchange students into her home from Mexico, Germany, Argentina and Hong Kong.  She also enjoyed volunteering for the food pantry at St. James Church. She will be missed by all her family, especially her Mini Schnauzer, Heidi.

Gretchen is survived by her nieces and nephews: Steve Behringer and wife Debbie, Daniel Behringer and wife Gail, Christopher Behringer, Beth Balinski and husband Mike, David Behringer and wife Maureen, Michelle Reynolds and husband Kevin, Brenda Bemiss and husband Doug, Kerri Stroka and husband Michael, and Aileen Behringer. She is also survived by several great nieces and nephews; brothers Lawrence F. Behringer and his wife Barbara of Franklin, PA; David A. Behringer and his wife Helen of North East, PA; sister in law Kathleen Behringer of Monroe, NY; close friends, Ellen Goggin, Louise Orlando, Carol Ann Buchanan, Janis Durrell and Susan Pymm. Gretchen’s family would like to express their gratitude to her neighbors, the Carters, who became like family to her.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Monday, October 18 at the St. James Church, Winter Street, Haverhill at 10:30AM.
