Angelo Cassanelli, 74 January 28, 1947 - February 22, 2021

HAVERHILL – Angelo Cassanelli, 74, passed away on Monday, February 22nd, 2021 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston.  Born in Bisceglie, Bari, Italy, he is the loving son of Leonardo and Giuseppina (Patroni) Cassanelli.

Angelo grew up in Italy and immigrated to Canada where he attended and graduated from High School in Montreal.  He enlisted and was a veteran in the Canadian Army and was honorably discharged.  Following his enlistment in Canada, Angelo immigrated to the United States where he joined the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1973, before his unit was deployed into Vietnam. He then served in the Army National Guard for over 20 years.

Angelo worked as a sous chef and had a love for food.  His talents lead him and his family to manage the Prince Grotto Restaurant in Lowell from 1967 to 1975 and then opening their own family restaurant, the Grotto Cassanelli, located on River Street in Haverhill until 1987.  Angelo also volunteered his time working with people with special needs, and was most recently employed with Opportunity Works in Haverhill.

In his free time Angelo enjoyed refereeing and playing soccer, skiing, taking scenic drives, and spending days at the beach.  He was an excellent photographer and had a great sense of humor.  His greatest joy came from being with his loving family, but mostly his granddaughter Madison.  He will truly be missed by his many friends and family.

Angelo is the loving father of Angela Cassanelli of New Haven, CT and Leo Cassanelli of Jay, VT; beloved brother John Cassanelli and his wife Charita of Somersworth, NH, Mauro Cassanelli and his wife Linda of Tewksbury and his sister Donna Ohannesian and her husband John “Sam” of Bradford; grandfather of Madison Cassanelli and uncle to several nieces and nephews: Jocelyn Cassanelli-Kenneally, Maria Ohannesian, Rosanna O’Connell, Diana Ouellete, Josie Cassanelli and Leonard Cassanelli; as well as many great nieces and nephews.
