Haverhill –Humphrey Stephen Williams Jr., 90, died Wednesday, January 11th at the Holy Family Hospital, in Methuen MA after a brief illness, with his family by his side.

Humphrey was born in Haverhill, MA, on September 2, 1932, to the late Humphrey and Margaret (Shay) Williams Sr.  After graduating from St. James High School in 1949, he studied at Merrimack College, in Andover MA and then joined the Navy where he served in the Korean War.

In his early years, he was a licensed plumber and aluminum sider, managing the care of his father’s many apartments. He owned the former Monimac Diner, in Merrimac MA, and was also one of the youngest elected City Councilmen in the City of Haverhill.

He retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and then went on to work for the City of Haverhill, as a Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer.

He was an avid golfer, had many hole in ones and was most proud of his round of 68, while playing with his son Humphrey, in NH. He was a long-time member at Crystal Springs Golf Course, and really looked forward to the annual Father and Son Golf Tournaments. He also looked forward to watching the New England Patriots on Sundays, with his youngest son Michael.

He loved to take Cruises with his wife Alba, to many different destinations and also his annual Golf trip with his gang, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

He was a devote Irish Catholic, who attended church faithfully, sometimes 7 days a week as well as volunteering his services to the church.

He loved to coach his 2 boy’s youth Baseball and Football teams. He also taught them how to play golf, which they have enjoyed playing together for many decades.

Most of all, he loved his family as they meant everything to him, and he was happiest when they were together.

He was predeceased by his sisters Joan Levesque, Margaret Williams, Mary Bower and Evelyn Scanlon.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Alba (Capluci) Williams; His children Humphrey, III and his wife Cora (Chase) Williams of Milton NH and Michael and his wife Lisa (Barnes) Williams of Bradford MA; grandchildren, Courtney Cronin, Jennifer Clevenstine, Dr. Melanie Tarbox and Lindsay Williams;7 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his youngest brother Thomas and his wife Diane Williams, of Florida and his brother in-law Dr. Arthur Bower and Grace Hamilton of Florida.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, January 18 from 4:00PM until 7:00PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home 486 Main Street, Haverhill. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home on Thursday, January 19 at 9:00AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Church, 165 S. Main St. Haverhill at 10:00AM. Interment, St. Patrick’s Cemetery, 395 N. Broadway, Haverhill
