HAVERHILL – Janet F. (Lay) Nielsen, 95, of Haverhill passed away peacefully on January 28 at Penacook Place Nursing Home in Haverhill.

Janet was born in Groveland to Karl and Grace (Carr) Lay. She graduated from Groveland High School, Class of 1946. Janet was a devoted wife to the late Charles R. Nielsen to whom she was married for over 44 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A woman of strong faith, she was active at the First Congregational Church of Haverhill where she enjoyed singing in the choir.

Janet raised her children for whom she loved to cook and sew. She found beauty in flowers and tending to her garden. She later worked part-time as a home health aide. Janet found great joy in singing with The Comedy Mask Review and performing at various nursing home and other community events.

Janet will be sadly missed by her beloved daughters Nancy Francis, of Bradford, Linda Nielsen, of Haverhill, and Wendy Lannan and husband, Kevin, of Haverhill, and her son Geoffrey Goddard and wife, Barbara, of Rockport. She also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren Brittany Bates and husband, Nicholas, Erin Lannan and fiancé, Patrick Poly, Benjamin Goddard and wife, Meagan, Megan Goddard and partner Ryan Cotter, and Timothy Goddard, two great-grandchildren Haakonsen and Zigfried, and several nieces and nephews.

Janet was predeceased by her brothers Richard and David Lay, and sisters Shirley Tyler and Joanne Gibbons.

The family would like to thank Penacook Nursing Home’s dedicated nurses and aides who tenderly cares for Janet the past two years and Elara Caring, hospice and the many home health aides whose care allowed Janet to spend more time in her home.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends are invited to attend services at 1pm on Saturday, February 10 at Groveland Congregational Church, 4 King Street, Groveland.
