Joseph G. St. Jean November 19, 1934 - December 18, 2019

Newton, NH – Joseph G. St.Jean, 85, husband of Paula A. (Brown) St. Jean for 54 years, passed away December 18, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Newburyport, he was the son of the late Joseph I. and Gertrude (Brown) St. Jean. He attended Merrimac High School and grammar schools in Newburyport. After graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps and served as a Corporal of Administration during his tour of duty and was honorably discharged. Joseph worked for the Portsmouth NH Navy Yard and for the Internal Revenue Service, where he retired as a management analyst. He was assistant to Frank Banks of the Neighborhood Youth Corps in Haverhill and for the Headstart Program. Joe also worked for Haverhill High School and Pentucket High School in West Newbury. He was involved in the sports programs of Haverhill and Hampton, NH. He organized and coached Babe Ruth League Baseball in Hampton. While living in Haverhill, he was President of Girls Softball, President of the Official Little League and was the key organizer for the league. Joe organized and coached the attempt to break the world’s longest basketball game in record, round the clock plant for 206 hours. The basketball used in the marathon was taken to the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in raising the funds for the resurgence of the Northern Essex college basketball team. Their record for their banner year was 29-2 and embarked on an international tour playing Canadian teams. While living in Kingston, NH he built an official Little League Field in his back yard where local little league teams came and played. Joe organized the St. Joe’s Basketball Tourney in Haverhill with local high school players. A generous man, he held season tickets to the New England Patriots and treated the neighborhood, including children to many games. He was the recipient of numerous citations for his work with the youth of the Haverhill area, including the Haverhill Good Citizen Award. With his wife Paula, Joe enjoyed traveling, especially to Disney World in FL, his grandchildren often accompanying them, making over 25 trips, as well as Disneyland in California. The couple traveled throughout the United States with family and friends.

In addition to his loving wife Paula, Joe is survived by his children, Joseph R. St. Jean, Scott St. Jean and his wife Jessica, Gerald St. Jean and his wife Jamie, Jill Fraser and her husband Adam, Christopher St. Jean and his wife Jennefer, Vincent St. Jean, and Bobby-Jo Cook and her husband Charles; thirteen grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; his brother, Robert St. Jean and his wife Trisha of OR; several half brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Ronald St. Jean.
