Robert D. Smith, 79 January 11, 1943 - May 12, 2022

Robert D. Smith, 79, died peacefully on Thursday evening, May 12, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born in Baltimore, MD to Robert B Smith, Jr and Mary (Touhey) Smith.

As a child Bob moved around the country frequently due to his father’s work, finally settling in Reading MA.  He graduated from Central Catholic HS in Lawrence, attended Georgia Tech for 2 years and then served in the US Army for two years before graduating Cum Laude from Northeastern University.

In 1968 he went to work for Raytheon until his retirement in 2003.  During his career with Raytheon he and his family lived in Tehran, Iran and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia before returning to the US to live in Windham, NH.  He and his wife then went on to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for 7 years.  He retired shortly after returning to the States and moved to Salisbury. As he said  “if we downsize to the beach, the children will come”. And come they do!  The summers are always filled with lots of fun, laughter and of course Poppy grilling for everyone.

Bob was an avid skier and golfer.  He was a member of the Golden Gliders at Mt. Cranmore in North Conway, NH, Valley Golf Club at The Valley at Eastport, Middle River, SC as well as the Social Seniors at Sagamore Golf Club, North Hampton, NH.  Bob and his 2 brother in Laws, Uncle Don & Uncle Jimmy were co-founders and proud members of the “Olympic Beer Drinking Team”.  One place you could be sure to find him was sitting as a spectator at all of his grandkids athletic events, Everyone, especially his grandkids, knew Poppy would be there quietly cheering on the team.

Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years Joyce (Furnari) Smith, his children Robin Finn & husband Tim and son Kevin.  His greatest joy were his grandchildren; Thomas, Jonathan and Katelyn Finn and Daniel and Joseph Smith who loved their Poppy and spending time with him at the beach. He is also survived by his brother Denis and wife Cathy of Marco Island Florida, sister-in-law and brother-law Linda and Donald Brouck.  Uncle Bob was a big presence in all of his nieces & nephews lives and will be missed by Jeff Brouck, Carolyn (Brouck) & Andrew Stratton, Daniel Kelly,  Katie (Kelly) & Jamie Corbett and Paul Kelly.  Bob was predeceased by his parents, brother James G Smith, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Natalie and James Kelly.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Funeral services for Mr. Smith are private.
