Bernadette L. (Nadeau) Towne) Primmer

Beverly – Bernadette L. (Nadeau) Primmer, 91, passed away March 22, 2020 at Care One at Essex Park in Beverly.

Born in Danvers, she was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Louise (Ouimette) Nadeau. She was 1 of 12 children, raised and educated in Danvers and resided for many years in Wenham before moving to Beverly. Bernie was one of the first employees of the former Ann and Hope in Danvers and worked for many years as head cashier. She loved square dancing and when she was a young mother, she made her six children’s clothes and her own square dancing skirts and petticoats. She bowled for many years and was a member of many different leagues. The last league she played on at the age of 86 with her two daughters, Jean and Susan, she beat the pants off of many team players. A great fan of all the Boston teams, she especially loved watching the Red Sox, the Patriots and the Bruins. Bernie was fond of gardening flowers and her favorite was carnations. She loved any kind of board games, Chinese checkers, cribbage puzzles and crossword puzzles. Always ready for a card game, she was a willing participant at bingo and played the daily lottery. A kind, sweet woman, she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Her son in law Paul always quoted:  Bernie was the best and kindest mother in law in the world.

Bernie is survived by her children, John P. Towne and his partner Sue Lee of Antrim NH; Jean Vitale and her husband Paul, formerly of Beverly and of Port St. Lucie, FL; Linda Gauthier of Beverly; Susan Towne of Beverly; Nancy York and her husband Bob of Farmington, NH; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three surviving siblings, Anna Mohr of IL; Larry Nadeau and Patsy White of MA; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Robert Towne, her first husband, Charles Towne and her second husband John Primmer and her many siblings.

Funeral services will be private. Arrangements are by the Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. Please visit Comeau Funeral Home on Facebook or www.comeaufuneral.com

Dear Romaine, I just read the message that Norman Landry sent out to NECC Retirees about the loss of your husband, Jake. Oh Romaine, I am so sorry to hear this news. In fact, I think back to the fall, when I came to your house and met Jake right in your living room. It was a special moment to be there with both of you, and I was so happy to see you again and to meet Jake. I send you my heartfelt sympathy and please know that you and Jake will be in my thoughts and prayers. With love and blessings, Jane

I have many fond memories of sitting at the kitchen table of her Wenham house, playing cards and laughing. I was in the house so often in my youth and middle school days I began calling Bernie “Ma”. She was a joyous person to be around and treated me as one of the family. There are not many people in the world as open and welcoming as she was. There will be a little less sun here and a little more in heaven. My thought and prayers for you all.

When I think of Ma Towne I always smile. I spent many hours being part of this wonderful family and have so many wonderful memories of her. She was always so good to me. Her kindness, compassion and patience were amazing. I think I loved her laugh the most. As a teenager I think I took for granted just how wonderful she was. I can only hope she knows that I loved my second Mom.
She will be missed but now she is at peace and singing in the Angels choir.
Sending loving thoughts to you all.
