Victoria Martinez, 99, of Haverhill, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, May 5 at the Wingate at Haverhill Nursing Home.Born, raised and educated in Dajabon, Dominican Republic, she was the daughter of Jose and Enedina (Rancier) Fontanilla. Living in the Dominican Republic most of her life, she moved to Haverhill twenty-five years ago to spend her retirement with her daughter and granddaughter. Before retirement she spent a lifetime as an Apothecary and dispensed medicine and medical advice to her community. She was well known, highly respected, and loved by everyone in her town, so much so that the people of Dajabon wanted her for Mayor, which see gracefully turned down. Her life was caring for people as she also volunteered for the Red Cross.The widow of Alejandro Martinez who died in 1947, she leaves her loving daughter, Elsa Vargas, of Bradford, six cherished grandchildren, Roberto, Wanda, Henry, and Manuel Martinez, and Alex, and Grace Vargas, ten great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Rafael Martinez, a brother, Rafael Fontanilla, and sisters, Elisa, Maria, Rosa, Antonia, and Reina. Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Friday morning from 9 until 10:30 AM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. Haverhill. A Mass of Christian Burial will then be celebrated at 11:00 AM in St. James Church, Winter St. Haverhill with burial to follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Salem St. Bradford.
