Raymond Godfrey

Raymond T. Godfrey, of Amesbury, formerly of Haverhill, died Friday, September 2, at the Merrimack Valley Hospital after being stricken ill suddenly at home.Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late, Michael and Delia (Fitzgerald) Godfrey. He was a Graduate of St. James Grammar School, and Haverhill Trade School, Class of 1952. A Veteran of the Korean War, Mr.Godfrey proudly served in the United States Army, and was honorably discharged.Mr. Godfrey was employed in the Street Department for the Haverhill Gas Co, and later the Essex County Gas Company. He relocated to Amesbury along with the Gas Company in 1976, and retired in 1994. A man of strong faith, he grew up in St. James Parish in Haverhill and was a daily communicant at the Star of the Sea Church after his move to Amesbury.He leaves two brothers, Edward F, and his wife, Carolyn E. Godfrey, of Haverhill, and John J. and his wife Patricia Godfrey, of Raymond, NH, several nieces and nephews, and friends of his close community in Amesbury who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his brothers, William B. and Gerald M., and a sister, Theresa Wentworth.Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Tuesday morning from 9:00 until 10:30 AM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. A Mass of Christian Burial will then be celebrated at 11:00 AM in St. James Church, Winter St. Haverhill. Burial is private. Memorial donations may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, Floor 6, Brookline, MA 02445-9924.
