Merrimac – John E. Carey, 76, of Merrimac, died Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport after a lengthy period of declining health. Born in Haverhill, December 24, 1936, he was the son of the late, John W. and Viola M. (Blackburn) Carey. Raised in Haverhill, he was a Graduate of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, class of 1953. He married his wife Rachel (Beaulieu) on September 7, 1959 and has resided in Merrimac for the past forty-five years. Mr. Carey was employed at the Haverhill Paperboard Company in Bradford, working as an inspector with the company for over twenty-five years.Mr. Carey was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. John’s favorite pastimes were to play golf and go camping, watching sports on TV and playing cards with family. Above all, he cherished his time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He leaves his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Rachel D. (Beaulieu) Carey, of Merrimac, five sons, Michael W. Carey, and his wife, Cheryl, Timothy W. Carey, Patrick J. Carey, and his wife, Melinda, all of Plaistow, Daniel J. Carey and his fiancé, Kristene Blacky, of Merrimac, and Darren E. Carey and his wife, Stacy, of Newton, NH, a daughter in law, Lisa Young-Carey, of Merrimac, twelve grandchildren, Rebekah, Joshua, Kyle, Jessica, Nicole, Lyle, Siara, and Cameron Carey, Alyssa Josephson, Carl Josephson, and Laren Ericson, and McKenna Blacky, five great grandchildren Mason, Conner, Brodie, Adrianna, Sophia, three brothers, Paul Carey and his wife, Marie, of Plaistow, Robert Carey, of NH, and James and his wife, Suzanne, of Merrimac, two sisters, Audrey Winter, of Exeter, NH, and Violet Gallant, of Merrimac, a brother in law, John Proia, and sister in law, Cathey Carey, both of Bradford, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Rosemary Proia and brother, Richard. Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Friday, January 3, 2014, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 10:00 AM in the Holy Redeemer Parish, Church of the Nativity, 4 Green St. Merrimac.
