Alvan Stanley Emerson, 83, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at his home, after a lengthy illness.Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late, Frederick G. and Rachel (Caswell) Emerson. He attended Haverhill public schools and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1945. Upon graduation, Mr. Emerson enlisted into the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his country during World War II. A Seaman Second Class, he served aboard the U.S.S. Los Angeles, receiving the World War II Victory Medal.Following his honorable discharge, he went back to work on the Emerson Family Dairy Farm, located on Broadway in Haverhill. A machinist by trade, he left the farm and was employed by Bolton and Emerson Company, in Lawrence, where he would work until 1986. He also worked as a newspaper delivery driver, and delivered the Boston Globe and Herald every morning from Salisbury to Merrimac.A close family man, he then went to work with his son for Jade Landscaping and Sprinkler Systems until his illness forced him into retirement in 2003.The widower of Mildred A. (Collins), who died in 2002, he leaves two sons, Douglas M. Emerson, of Plaistow, N.H., Jeffrey C. Emerson and his wife Evelyn of West Newbury two daughters, Darlene M. Fisher and her husband Dean of Plaistow, Gale L. Staples and her husband, Robin of Haverhill a sister, Natalie Gagnon, also of Haverhill five grandchildren, Jeffrey, Charles, Destiny, Ryan, Sarah, and Abigayle a great-granddaughter, Steffanie and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Alvan S. Emerson Jr., and siblings, Muriel, Dudley, Beatrice, Russell, Frederick, Barbara, and Lester.ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Sunday, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Route 125), Haverhill. Funeral services will be held on Monday morning at 10 a.m. in the funeral home.
