Bertha Leate

Amesbury – Bertha E. (Soules) Leate, 92, wife of the late Charles Leate, passed away on Saturday, April 9 at Maplewood Nursing Center in Amesbury surrounded by her loving family. Born in St. Johnsville, NY she was the daughter of the late Frank and Marjorie (LaVine) Soules. She attended school in New York and was a graduate of Knox Jr. High School, Class of 1941. During World War II she worked in a rocket shell factory helping with the war effort. She had a strong faith, enjoying reading her bible, which led her to become a missionary, serving in the Ohio Valley area for two years. Bertha found great joy volunteering for many years at various nursing homes reading the bible to the patients. She also worked for the Fernald School for the Blind. She loved spending time with her family and shared stories of her life with family and friends she had known since childhood. She liked to crotchet and teach her family to crotchet as well. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.She is survived by her grandchildren, Heidi Weir of Haverhill Vivian Sayers and her husband Richard of Sandown, NH Carrie Ingalls and her husband Al of Haverhill Emily Weir of Santa Cruz, CA Rebecca Weir and her husband Sarin Kim of Haverhill and Amanda Weir of Haverhill seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She was predeceased by her daughter Carol Newcomb and her siblings, Gertrude, Beatrice, Sylvia, Vivian, Leona and Ira.Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, April 13 from 4:00PM until 7:00PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. A funeral service will follow at 7:00PM in the funeral home.
