John Joseph Mahoney, 91, of South Groveland, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill surrounded by his family, after a lengthy illness.Born in South Groveland, he was the son of the late Dennis J. and Delia (Kelly) Mahoney and lived there all of his life. He attended Groveland Public Schools and was a graduate of Groveland High School, Class of 1935.A Veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry in the European theater. Wounded in action in France, he later returned to active duty. He was a Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge recipient.He was a lifelong and active member of his Church, St. Patrick’s Church in South Groveland. He was a member of the Groveland Light Commission, the American Legion, post 248, and Lorraine Post 29 V.F.W.Mr. Mahoney was employed as a lineman for Massachusetts Electric Company for 42 years, retiring in 1977. Not the type of man to sit idle, he went on to work at his good friends saw mill, the Ralph Esty Sawmill on Uptack Road in Groveland for 20 years.The widower of Elinor (Graham) Mahoney, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen M. and Gail S. (Giarrusso) Mahoney of Bradford four grandchildren, Katie E., Ryan M., Devin M. and Alyssa S. Mahoney and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, James D. Mahoney in 1997 and siblings, Mary Murphy, Paul Mahoney, Monica Bagley, James Mahoney, and Therese Singster.ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Tuesday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Route 125) Haverhill. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10:30 in St. Patrick’s Church, Center Street, South Groveland, Burial will follow in the family lot at Riverview Cemetery, Main Street, Groveland.
