Norene M. (Crites) Harrington, 78, of Merrimac, formerly of Haverhill, died Thursday, April 28, at the Hannah Duston Health Care in Haverhill, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness.Born in Haverhill, she was the daughter of the late, Albert E. and Mary (Burke) Crites. Raised and educated in the “Acre” section of the city, she was a lifelong member of St. James Parish. She attended both St. James Grammar School and St. James High School, graduating with the Class of 1950. She then attended St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in Boston and received her Registered Nurse Certification in 1953.Although she resided in Merrimac for the past six years, her heart never left the “Acre” and the family home on 13th Ave where she and her husband Dan spent over fifty years. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and nurse, Norene used her nursing skills for many summers at Camp Sea Haven on Plum Island as she and her husband, Dan ran the camp for children afflicted with polio and other conditions. Throughout her career, she was employed at the former Hale Hospital, various local nursing homes, as a private duty nurse, and the Haverhill Housing Authority.She leaves her beloved husband of fifty-seven years, Daniel R. Harrington Jr, of Haverhill, two sons, Michael D. Harrington, of Ossipee, NH, and Daniel R. Harrington III, of Frisco, CO, daughters, Ann M. and her husband, Chuck A. Lagasse, of Newburyport, MA, Susan M. Harrington, of Haverhill, Maura K. and her husband, Mark A. Flaherty, of Boston, Jane E. and her husband Chuck Murray, of Groveland, and Amy M. and her husband, Steve Solomon, of Marblehead, a sister, Dorothy M. Keefe, of Haverhill, thirteen cherished grandchildren, Lauren, Christopher, and Timothy MacMillan, Megan and Charlie Lagasse, Emily Harrington, Colleen, Erin, and Kelly Murray, Nolan and Brenna Flaherty, and Sarah and Daniel Solomon, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings, Nancy Wenkus, and John and Albert Crites.At the request of Mrs. Harrington, calling hours are ommitted. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 2, at 11:00 AM in St. James Church, Winter St. Haverhill. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Primrose St. Haverhill. A family reception will follow in the parish hall of St. James Church. Memorial donations may be made to Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
