Haverhill – Richard Tarlaian, 81, of Haverhill, died Monday, November 12, 2013 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House after a lengthy illness.Born in Haverhill, July 8, 1932, he was the son of the late Stephen and Armene (Takvorian) Tarlaian who escaped the Turkish massacre. Educated in Haverhill, he was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1950. He then continued his education and taking night courses in bookkeeping at Haverhill High School and accounting classes at Boston University.As a young man Richard enjoyed playing cards, horseshoes, bowling and playing baseball, and worked as a Haverhill Gazette Paperboy. As he grew he lifted weights, played tennis and loved trips to the beach. He was an avid fan of the New York Giants, the Boston Braves and later, the Atlanta Braves. His long and varied career began in the local shoe industry, working at Ornsteen and Kramer Shoe factories. He also worked at Borden Chemical Co. in North Andover. He was the type of man never afraid to try anything, a talented entrepreneur he owned and operated Metro Photo Service in Haverhill, and the Hydro Brush Car Wash on Winter St. He was the proud producer of Big Scoops Ice Cream in Rye, NH, and was the Bowes distributor of replacement auto parts in this region. A generous man, Mr. Tarlaian gave to several charities and local organizations and more importantly gave time and assistance to friends in need. He loved dogs and cats that would embrace him automatically with his animal magnetism. He leaves his beloved brother with whom he lived, Martin S. Tarlaian, cherished niece, Dorothy- Ann Foster and her husband, Edward, of Patterson, NY, grand nieces, Sharon Brickley and her husband, Timothy, of Mifflinburg, PA, Darlene Wallace, of Pottsville, NY, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Hagop “Jack” Tarlaian.Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Thursday from 4 until 7:00 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. Funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 AM in the funeral home with burial to follow in Linwood Cemetery.
