Haverhill – William D. Wicks Jr, 93, a retired Haverhill Police Officer, died Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Penacook Place Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield, MA, he was the son of William D. Sr. and Sarah V. (Fosse) Wicks. Raised and educated in Haverhill, he was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1939. A WWII Veteran, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. The oldest living retiree from the Haverhill Police Department, Mr. Wicks proudly patrolled the streets of Haverhill from 1947 until his retirement in 1977. Known as a old fashioned “City Servant” he took his job seriously and mentored many children in Haverhill. An avid Red Sox fan, he shared his love of the game of baseball and coached P.A.L. , Little League, Pony League, and American Legion Baseball. His memberships included the Haverhill AMVETS Post 47, Plaistow American Legion Post 34. A Master Mason, he was recognized for fifty years of membership in the A.F. and A.M. Gideon Lodge, Kingston, NH. The Widower of his beloved Estelle C. (Turner) Wicks who died in 2003, he leaves a son, Robert T. Wicks, of Haverhill, two daughters M. Suzanne Wicks, of Fremont, NH, and Lucinda W. “Cindy” Mitchell, of Haverhill, a daughter in law, Dorothy Wicks, of Townsend, seven grandchildren, Samuel, Michael, William, and Kevin Wicks, Jennifer Mitchell, Elizabeth McGovern, and Sarah Malette, ten great grandchildren, Cameron, Briana, Christina, Sean, Collin, Jeremy, Brady, Thomas, Theresa, and Julie Ann, a brother, Arthur K. Wicks and his wife, Patricia, of Haverhill, a sister, Ruth V. Hoffman, of Andover. He was predeceased by his son, William D. Wicks III, and his sister Barbara A. Calnan.The family of Mr. Wicks wishes to extend their gratitude to the entire staff of Penacook Place for the outstanding care given to their father. Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Wednesday from 4 until 7 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM in the First Church of Christ, 10 Church St. Bradford. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Maplewood North Parish Cemetery, Rte 121, Haverhill.
