Both girls were raised in Newburyport and Plum Island, where Cheryl was one of the first single woman to buy a home on the Island.

Aside from owning a home on Plum Island, Cheryl also owned property in downtown Newburyport where she shared her time between Key West, FL for several years before moving home to New England on the coast of Maine and then ultimately back to Newburyport. Her eldest daughter Courtney Bridgewater, owns and operates her hair salon in Newburyport and resides in Haverhill with her husband Tom and two of Cheryl’s grandchildren, Logan and Lila. Her youngest daughter Harley Volkers, lives in Epping, NH with her husband William and oldest granddaughter, Kai.

She had one great love of her life, but, many wonderful men that she shared portions of her life with. She loved her friends and became part of their families. She never tried to change anyone, instead, she had an amazing grace to let everyone be. Cheryl traveled extensively, especially with her airline career. With the arrival of her first grandchild, she moved to Epping, NH to make time to be in her granddaughter’s life. She spend countless hours with Kai on projects to the point where whenever Cheryl walked in the door, Kai would run to get them a project to do and Harley would try to explain to Kai that Mimi was here to visit her too.

She loved to try new things. Cheryl had an amazing knack for finding the most beautiful places to live. She thrived on change, always loved a new place and a new job to learn. She loved Silly. She loved to dance and had one signature move, loved jazz music and was a voracious reader. Cheryl loved houses and good designs. She would drive around and critique every house. Mimi had several fender benders as a result of this past time, so she rarely got to drive. She had such a great eye for design that she often helped Harley with final installs on design projects.

The family can’t tell how much they hate that their Mum, Cheryl Merrill is no longer with them, but their hope is you will join them for services in her honor. Please bring your stories, serious and humorous. Let’s balance the sorrow for losing her with the joy of having known her in the first place.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a celebration of her life on Wednesday, November 6 from 4:00PM until 7:00PM at the Kevin B.
