Sara “Sally” (Hartzell) Smith August 11, 1931 - January 24, 2022

Newburyport – Sara “Sally” (Hartzell) Smith, 90, wife of the late Donald E. Smith, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2022 with her loving family by her side.

Born in Slingerlands, NY, she was the daughter of the late Clinton H. and Jean (Bull) Hartzell. She graduated from Bethlehem High School and continued her education at Albany Business College. Sally was an administrative assistant and enjoyed working for a variety of establishments, including a Denver radio station, Faulkner Hospital, Vernon A. Martin Realtors, and most recently with the Newburyport Housing Authority for 21 years. She also enjoyed volunteer work, including helping with a special needs classroom at the Kelly School, being a Girl Scout leader, and volunteering at her church. She had an adventurous soul as her life brought her to Denver where she met her husband, Don. They then set roots and raised a family in Marblehead, before moving to Newburyport. Sally was creative and enjoyed painting, knitting, crocheting, and crafts especially with her children and grandchildren. Her love for the ocean and mountains were reflected in many of her paintings.

Sally is survived by her daughter, Jenna Smith of Newburyport; two grandchildren, Sarah Sullivan and Meghan Sullivan, who lovingly called her Nanya. In addition to her husband Don, she was predeceased by her son Lincoln Smith who passed away in 2019. Being one of 9 children, she also leaves behind her dear brother William Howard Hartzell of Montross, VA, and several nieces and nephews, all who she loved very much. Friends and family will forever miss her sweet smile, sense of humor, quick wit, practical jokes, kindness, and genuine care of others. She was truly one of the most positive and kindest souls. She was devoted to her family and friends, all who will miss her very much.
