Haverhill – Martin S. Tarlaian, 97, of Haverhill, died on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at the home of his niece in Mifflinburg, PA.

Martin was born in Lawrence on March 26, 1925 and was the son of Stephen and Armene (Takvorian) Tarlaian. Martin was the brother of the late Jack and Richard Tarlaian. He was the uncle of Dorothy Foster and grand-uncle of Dorene Wallace of Pottsville, PA., and Sharon Brickley of Mifflinburg, PA.

Martin was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1943. He enlisted in the Navy Construction Battalion known as the Seabees and was shipped out to Gamadoudou, Milne Bay and served during World War II from 1943 to 1946.  He received a World War II Victory metal as well as a Bronze Star.   His was proud to service his country and looked back on those years not as an obligation but a duty. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from New England Conservatory in Music Education and later a Master’s degree from Columbia University. He later taught from 1952-1964 at many different schools including Manchester, NH. And Plattsburgh, NY. and he also worked for the Postal Service from 1978-1990 as a mail carrier.

Mr. Tarlaian was very proud of his Armenian heritage, he loved teaching students how play musical instruments along with choral singing instruction. Marty was a kind and giving man who liked to entertain his family and friends by singing and playing the violin. Many days you could find him at the local hospital having lunch with friends. He enjoyed talking about his time in the Seabees, being a music teacher in many different schools in the New England area, maintaining his home and caring for his brothers grave.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, October 11, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home 486 Main Street, Haverhill. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, October 12 at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at Linwood Cemetery, Mill St., Haverhill.
