Date of Funeral

August 26, 2023

BRADFORD– Margaret A. “Peg” Walsh, 80, of Bradford, passed away on Friday August 11, at the Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover.

Peg was born in Bellevue, PA on February 14, 1943 the only child of Edward and Mary (Schneider) McBride. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Carlow College, Pittsburgh, PA followed by a Doctorate of Philosophy from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA. Peg was a beloved professor of Philosophy at Bradford College for 27 years, where she challenged students to think critically and analyze the fundamental questions of life.  Through her teaching at Bradford, Peg connected with her students and became a lifelong friend and mentor to many.  When the college closed its doors in May of 2000, Peg served as a professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Simmons College, and Merrimack College. Upon her retirement, she began a new academic endeavor as one of the founders of the Rainbow Lifelong Learning Institute of Boston. At Rainbow, Peg worked to create an educational and social environment where LGBT seniors could learn and thrive with others.  Among many interests, Peg enjoyed playing bridge. She got her start at the North Andover Senior Center, was soon hosting competitive games at her home in Bradford and eventually took her game on the road with friends to bridge weekends in New Hampshire.  She loved being a part of her book club, attending her granddaughters’ sporting events and theatrical performances, and cheering on the Celtics. Peg found herself enriched and embraced by the community she found at the UU Church of Haverhill.  She will be remembered dearly by all those who knew and loved her.

Peg is survived by her daughters Laura Harris and her husband Todd, of Lynnfield, and Karen Gray and her husband Rob, of Belmont; her niece Susan Walsh and her husband, Jamin AAsum of Portland, OR; and her grandchildren Courtney, Phoebe, Bridget and Abigail.

Peggy was a wonderful colleague who it was a pleasure to know and teach with. Her students loved her and I am sure were touched by her spirit and wisdom. She made up part of the core of the “Bradford experience”.

One of my favorite teachers/professors/human beings of all times… at Bradford College, my partner in crime , Patrick McCarthy and I would stay up all night finding flaws in her philosophy’s… thinking we had her in a corner… and we would proudly present out findings to her after class as to not embarrass her… and as we shared our discoveries we we generally presented with “That’s very interesting guys… . but did you consider.etc…etc….? ” to which, we left her office with our proverbial tails between our legs…. We always tried to get out of her, her favorite philosopher…. Nietzsche. Kierkegaard, Plato?, …..she wouldn’t budge… she was amazing… she made you think… that was at least one of her purposes in life … she was always there to support me and listen to my music whether it was a concert or just playing in the local lounge … I loved you Peg… thank you for being an inspiration to me…. and so many others….

Humble, kind, and intelligent Peggy was quite simply a wonderful human being. We served together on a volunteer committee supporting folks with disabilities for well over a decade. She will be remembered for her commitment to vulnerable people and making the world a better place.
