Lendell Alexander “Butch” Hurd Jr., 63 of Groveland, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Sunday, January, 22, at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, after a sudden illness.Born in Lynn, November 30, 1948, he was the son of the late, Lendell A. Sr and Ruth (Tucker) Hurd. Raised and educated in Saugus, Butch was always fascinated with cars and auto mechanics. He would eventually find his calling as a self employed mobile truck/auto mechanic. His passion for cars did not end with his love for being a mechanic it also included a deep passion for stock car racing. He was not only the proud owner of several personally built and modified race cars, but also was an accomplished race car driver. Butch could be found most weekends, along with his family doubling as his pit crew for car #99, racing at both Star and Lee Speedways in New Hampshire. Stock car racing was not the only passion in his life for it was the love he shared for his wife and family.On September 26, 1969, Butch would marry the love of his life, Marie Ann (Cuocolo) Hurd. Living in Groveland for the majority of their marriage, Butch and Marie would spend the next forty-two years raising their family together with Marie alongside Butch on the speedways, working as his crew chief.He leaves his wife Marie A. (Cuocolo) Hurd, of Groveland, a daughter, Vicki A. Hurd, of Seabrook, NH, three sons, Craig D. and his wife, Mellissa, of Haverhill, Colby A. and Dallis J., both of Groveland, four, sisters, Patricia O’Connell and her husband, Michael, of Peobody, Linda Bellatoni and her husband Ned, of Southboro, Barbara Mower and her husband Steve, of Lynn, and Sheree Shepard, of Foxboro, two cherished grandchildren, Sophia and Vincent Hurd, and nieces and nephews.Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Wednesday, January, 25, from 5 until 8 PM, at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 26, at 9AM from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 AM in St. Patrick’s Church, 114 Center St. Groveland. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, 186 main St. Groveland.
