Richard Lyle Johnson, 89, of Haverhill, died Wednesday, January 23, at the Oxford Nursing surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness.Born in Refugio, Texas he was the son of the late James and Anna Mae (Ryals) Johnson. Educated in Refugio, he attended public school and was a graduate of Refugio High School, Class of 1941. Upon graduation he promptly enlisted into the U.S. Navy. A WWII Navy Veteran, he served honorably on many ships and spent much time in the Pacific Theatre during the war. He proudly served his country for five years, being discharged in 1946. His medals include, American defense (1 star), American theater, Pacific Theater (5 stars) European Theater, Philippines Liberation and Victory Medal.Returning from service, he met and married the love of his life, Lucy B. (Grasso) in 1945, and settled in Haverhill. Starting his career as a letter carrier with the U. S. Postal Service he was promoted to Supervisor in the Haverhill office and retired in 1988 after forty years of service.A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he leaves his beloved wife of sixty-seven years, Lucy B. (Grasso) Johnson, of Haverhill a daughter and son in law, Janet F. Guilbert and her husband, Dr. Daniel B. Guilbert, of Worcester, grandson, Matthew J. Guilbert and his wife, Dana, of San Diego, CA, grandson in law, Scott Maher, of Framingham, a cherished great granddaughter, Megan Maher, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving granddaughter, Dr. Julie Guilbert, and siblings, John “Jack” Johnson, Price K. Johnson, and Mary A. Naylor.Friends and family are respectfully invited to his funeral service on Saturday, January 26, at 11:30 AM in the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral home, 486 Main St. (Rte. 125) Haverhill. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. James Cemetery, Primrose St. Haverhill. Calling hours will precede the service from 10:30 AM until 11:30 AM.
