Phoenix, Arizona – Edmond S. Martocchia, 81, formerly of Groveland, passed away on Tuesday February 9 at his home after being stricken ill suddenly.Born in Pittsburgh, PA he was the son of the late Claudio and Annuziata (Gentile) Martocchia. At the age of two his family moved back to Italy where he attended school. While growing up in Italy he became an avid soccer player and played in the International Soccer League. As a teenager he returned to the United States with his family and they settled in Haverhill. Upon his return he continued to play soccer, and when his children were of age to play he became a soccer coach and continued to coach youth soccer for over fifty years. He coached many players from all over the North Shore.After his only son’s death in 1968 at the age of seven, the family moved to Arizona. Seven years later they came back to Mass, when Ed, a talented carpenter and craftsman, custom built a home for his family evening and weekends while working as a carpenter full time at GE.Upon his retirement he moved back to Phoenix, as he loved the sun and there he could garden year round. He further enjoyed the fruits of his labor through his cooking.Ed was a perfectionist and it showed in everything that he worked on. He was a fabulous cook and the family loved to gather around his table. He was a devoted father and grandfather.Edmond Salvatore Martocchia will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by four daughters, Nancy G. Martocchia of Raymond, NH Maria A. Peer and her husband Garland of Raymond, NH Teresa A. Stockwell of Groveland and Gina M. Martocchia and her partner Mark R. Johnston of Bradford a sister, Anna V. Cusimano of Haverhill five grandchildren, Aimee Hopper and Scott Hopper, Tyler Peer, Ashley Demont and Allison Stockwell three great grandchildren, Brody, Domenic and Nicolena his niece Lucia (Cusimano) Theberge of Plaistow, NH his good friend Frank Martin of Phoenix, AZ. He was predeceased by his son Edmondo G. Martocchia.Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Friday, February 19th from 10:00AM until 12:00PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. Funeral services will follow at 12:00PM in the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, North Broadway, Haverhill.
