Atkinson, NH – Joseph Leo Barry, 97, beloved husband of Sabina D. (Whittemore) Barry, of Atkinson, NH passed away peacefully at his residence with his family by his side on Saturday, June 11.Born and raised in Gloucester, he was the son of the late, Michael J. and Bridget (O’Halloran) Barry. He attended Gloucester public schools and was a graduate of Gloucester High School. As a lifelong Advocate for children with special needs, Mr. Barry was well known in the Boston political scene. He was the founder and manager of the Barry Research Foundation for Emotionally Disturbed Children and worked tirelessly for their cause. An entrepreneur, he was owner and operator of a vending machine business known as Newbury Vending in Boston. He was known for his quick Irish wit and great sense of humor and enjoyed a friendly game of cards.A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he leaves his wife of forty-six years, Sabina D. (Whittemore) Barry, of Atkinson, NH, two sons Kevin M. Barry and his wife, Maria T. (Krysko) Barry, of Atkinson, NH, and Sean P. Barry, of North Attleboro, a daughter Sabina B. Barry, of Danville, NH, four cherished grandchildren Brendon Chabot, Nolan, Lily, and Norah Barry, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by a son, Joseph M. Barry. One of fourteen children, his siblings include Richard, William, Michael, John, Patrick, James, Joseph, Elenor, Ann, Elizabeth, Catherine, Agnes, Margaret, and Ceila.Friends and family are respectfully invited to calling hours on Monday, June 13, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. Haverhill. Funeral services will begin on Tuesday morning at 10:30 AM from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:30 AM at All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Ave, Haverhill. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Family Support Foundation for Mental Illness.
