Alfred F. “Fred” Nataloni, 83, former Director of the Massachusetts Division of Marine and Recreational Vehicles, (Retired) of the Bradford section of Haverhill, formerly of Manchester by the Sea, died Saturday, August 25, at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late, Antonio and Daria (Mazzarini) Nataloni. Raised and educated in Washington D.C. and Manchester by the Sea, he was a Graduate of Manchester Story High School, Class of 1947 and upon graduation enlisted into the U.S. Navy with aspirations of becoming a pilot. Being honorably discharged from the Navy he then transferred into the U.S. Army Air Corps, and also being honorably discharged, transferred into the U.S. Air Force. As a Flight Crew Member he served in the Occupational Services in Germany and was assigned to the Berlin Air Lift. Prior to discharge, he returned to U.S. Military field to prepare the newest Fighter Jet, (F-86) for the Korean War, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force as Staff Sergeant in August 1951.Returning to civilian workforce after serving, he enrolled into the University of New Hampshire for Engineering. He began his career with the Pipeline Welding and Construction Co. in New Jersey, to support his college effort. Progressing rapidly in the company, he became office manager and was assigned to a major pipeline project in India. After a year in India he traveled the world. Returning to New Jersey, he met and married the love of his life, Nancy (Sitar) in February of 1956.Raising his family in Manchester by the Sea, he then became the Captain of the Manchester Yacht Club where he served from 1962 thru 1969. He obtained his Coast Guard Captains License and was appointed Assistant Harbor Master for the Town of Manchester that same year. He experienced many adventurous voyages in and out of job related excursions.Serving at the State level for the Division of Marine and Recreational Vehicles, he was later appointed the Director of the Division by then Governor Francis W. Sargent. Through his long distinguished career the Division would go through many changes as he would serve the Commonwealth through six administrations, retiring from the Massachusetts Division of Environmental Police in 1997.A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves his beloved wife of fifty-six years, Nancy (Sitar) Nataloni, of Bradford, four loving daughters, Darice M. McIntire and her husband, Scott W., of Essex, Lisa J. Foster, of Maui, HI, Michelle Gavin and her husband Michael, of Manchester by the Sea, and Jodie Nataloni of North Andover, nine cherished grandchildren, Frederick, Keri, Katie, and Meghan Gavin, Melissa Impett, Jake and Nolan McCoy, and Kelly and Steven McIntire, two great grandchildren, Jackson and Molly Schimpf, a sister, Joyce Carroll, Falmouth, MA, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Marie, a brother, John Nataloni, and a sister, Annette Shlopak.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday morning, August 30, at 11:00 AM in Sacred Heart Church, 62 School St. Manchester by the Sea, MA. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Pine St., Manchester, MA. Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 4 until 8 PM in Sacred Heart Church, 62 School St. Manchester, MA. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Haverhill, 48 South Chestnut St. Haverhill, MA 01835 Arrangements are by the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill.
