Allen Simmons

Allen Jed Simmons, 79, of Haverhill, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the Merrimack Valley Hospital.Born in White Lake, Wisconsin, on July 22, 1932, he was son of the late Jed and Della (Finley) Simmons and attended the Cherry Oaks Grammar School in Michigan, and then the Culver City High School in California.A Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient, Mr. Simmons proudly served in the Korean War, enlisting into the United States Army National Guard immediately after high school. Serving as a radio operator in the 143rd Armored Battery Division, his unit was called into active duty shortly after the war began. Mr. Simmons served faithfully until 1953.For over 38 years, Allen was employed by the Hoyt and Worthern Tannery of Haverhill, working as a supervisor until his retirement.In his spare time, Allen enjoyed crafting, especially jewelry and leather works, often times gifting his creations to family and friends to enjoy. Most recently, he enjoyed spending time at Sarah’s Place Adult Day Care in Haverhill, where he made many new friends and his presence will be sorely missed. He was a proud member of the American Legion, Wilbur-Comeau Post 4, of Haverhill, and was a proud and honored contributor to the Salvation Army of Haverhill. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends but his lasting legacy will by remembered by all who knew him.He is survived by his two sons, Fred Simmons and his Fiancé Joyce Whipple Gamble of Haverhill, Timothy Simmons and his wife Dianne (Smith) of Haverhill, four daughters, Sally Mancini and her husband Patrick of Salem, NH, Michelle Simmons of Haverhill, Cynthia Simmons of Burbank, CA, and Sheryl Ceasar and her husband Robert of Chico, CA, seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Allen is pre-deceased by a son, Jerry Simmons, three brothers, Eugene Simmons, Leonard Simmons, and Lloyd Beckett, and his two sisters, Lucille and Louise.Friends and family are respectfully invited to attend funeral services for Allen at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 in the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. Calling hours will take place prior to the services from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
