Edward L. Jarvis Sr., 82, of West Newbury, MA, died August 28, 2012 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Bedford, MA.Born in Boston, September 3, 1929, he was the son of the late, C. Edward and Margaret M. (Donovan) Jarvis. He was predeceased his brother, William H. O’Donnell, and his sister and brother in law, Marilyn and Paul Shanahan.He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Marguerite (Faucon) Jarvis, a brother, Dr. Raymond Jarvis and his wife Katie, of Rye, NH, a sister Lorraine Dewar and her husband Roderick “Rory” of West Newbury, a son Edward L ”Ned” Jarvis, Jr. of Sandown, NH, two daughters, Christine Dickinson and her husband, Mark of West Newbury, and Susan Benoit of Stratham, NH. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Ryan and Eric Jarvis, Margaret, Sarah and Andrew Dickinson, and Sheriden Benoit, sister in law, Hilda “Snookie” O’Donnell, of Revere, and many relatives including, Judith Jarvis and her children, Christopher, Nicholas, and Carrie Cataldo.Raised and educated in Dorchester and Chelsea, he attended Roxbury Memorial High School for Boys. He was a graduate of Northeastern University, class of 1957.Mr. Jarvis served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany during the Korean War. As a young man he was an accomplished baseball player. Competing against thousands of area ball players he was named to the Boston All Star team as a starting outfielder his sophomore, junior and senior year. In his youth he also had the honor of being named “One of Boston’s 18 Best Baseball Players” and was a lifelong Red Sox fan.He loved skiing with his family in the White Mountain and enjoyed many ski trips to Vail, Colorado with friends and family. An avid tennis player, he was a long time member of Cedardale Athletic Club. Relocating to West Newbury in 1964, he built his home along the banks of the Merrimack River.He worked for the Pitcher Insurance Agency in Boston for 12 years before beginning a long career in Real Estate. Initially working for Carlson Real Estate in Topsfield and then starting his own company Jarvis Real Estate in West Newbury. He also co-owned Merrimack River Corporation, with a longtime friend, Carl Bergstrom.Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Tuesday, September 4, from 5 until 8 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Edward’s name to the Veterans Memorial Hospital c/o GRECC Program Unit 62 C-D, 200 Springs Rd, Bedford, MA 01730.
