Haverhill – Harry Merrill, 82, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Thursday, January 16, at the Penacook Place Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family after a period of declining health.Born May 17, 1931, he was the son of the late, Harry Sr. and Florence (Hutt) Merrill. He attended Haverhill public schools and Haverhill High School. A Korean War Veteran, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy. During that time Mr. Merrill served on the U.S.S. Tarawa, and was honorably discharged in 1962. He was a member of Haverhill AMVETS post 147. Mr. Merrill began his career in the local shoe industry working at the Fifth Ave. Shoe Manufacturing Co. and also at the F.W. Woolworth store in Haverhill, MA. Most of his career however was that of custodian in local nursing homes. He was employed at the O’Toole and Sullivan Nursing Home and later would retire from the Glynn Memorial Nursing Home in Haverhill, MA after fourteen years of service.Harry enjoyed playing BINGO and Pokeno with his friends at Merrivista Senior Housing until his recent illness forced him to move into Penacook Place. He will also be remembered for his kindness, generosity and humor. He would give to others without hesitation and never worry about himself. He will be dearly missed by those who knew him and loved him.Mr. Merrill is survived by his brother, Richard Lancaster, of Brownington, VT. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Earl C. Merrill, Robert C. Merrill, Mary E. Miller, Dorothy C. Merrill, and Shirley Ann Malcolm.Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on Tuesday, January 21, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held following visitation at 12:00 PM in the Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Veteran’s Section of the Linwood Cemetery, Mill St. Haverhill. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital, the Salvation Army, the MSPCA, or the charity of one’s choice.
