Mary Ellen (Uele) Jones, 58, a Haverhill native and longtime resident of the city, died Aug. 31, 2012, in Georgetown, South Carolina, after a long illness.Born in Haverhill, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Elizabeth (Cantwell) Uele of Haverhill. Mr. Uele died in 1965. Mrs. Uele died in 1988. She was the beloved wife of David Jones of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.Mrs. Jones graduated from Haverhill High School with the Class of 1971. She attended her 40th-year class reunion last fall and enjoyed an evening with friends she had not seen for many years. She also returned to Haverhill early this summer to participate with her friends in the annual Relay for Life walk at Northern Essex Community College, an event that raises money for the fight against cancer.Mary Ellen enjoyed caring for people. She worked in the health care industry for many years, in nursing homes and as a home health aide. Skilled at crafts, particularly making wreaths, She had a deep love of animals, taking in rescue dogs and also opening her home to cats. Her passion for the Boston Celtics, her favorite sports team, was reflected in her decision to name her cats after members of the team. She also enjoyed taking her dogs to a dog park near her home, where they would play with other dogs. One of the things she enjoyed most about the Myrtle Beach area was the many restaurants there and wide variety of foods they offer.Mrs. Jones’ husband, David, and extended family wish to thank the staff of the Tidelands Hospice for their extraordinary care of her and their kindness toward the family.Besides her husband, Mrs. Jones is survived by several aunts and uncles: Eleanor and Foster Kneeland, of Bradford Erlene Dozibrin, of Salem, N.H. George Cantwell, of Wenham Dorothy Cantwell, of Bradford Bernard and Loretta Cantwell, of Monroe, N.J. Robert and Catherine Cantwell, of Haverhill Patricia Ross, of Bradford and SophieAnn Murphy of North Andover. Mrs. Jones is also survived by many cousins. Most of those relatives live in the Greater Haverhill area.A memorial service for Mrs, Jones will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St. Building 9, Lawrence, MA 01843. The Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Rte 125) Haverhill, has the honor of assisting the family with local arrangements.
