PLAISTOW, NH – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John H. Melvin, Sr., a devoted family man, Vietnam Veteran, and beloved member of the Community. John peacefully departed this world on Friday, February 2, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at the Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH.
Born in Everett to Frederick and Mary (Otis) Melvin, John’s life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his country, his family, and his profound sense of humor. He attended Wilmington Schools, after which he made a courageous decision to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps and volunteered for duty during the Vietnam War. His bravery and commitment to our nation’s service will forever be remembered and honored.
John was not only a patriot but also a dedicated provider for his family. He possessed a remarkable sense of humor that could brighten even the darkest of days, and he was known throughout the community as a true man’s man. John cherished every moment of life and found joy in the simple pleasures, such as camping at Country Pond and traveling with his trailer.
In addition to his military service, John was a diligent worker who dedicated 20 years of his life to the B&M Railroad. His dedication to his job was a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family.
John is survived by his loving children: John H. Melvin, Jr. and his wife, Carrieann, of Lawrence, MA; Tyler L. Devito of Raymond, NH; Derek Melvin; and daughter Jill E. Dye and her husband, Eddie, of Plaistow, NH. He also leaves behind his devoted sister, Barbara Burris, of North Conway, NH; cherished grandchildren: Dylan Dye, Caroline Melvin, Lucian Devito Sylvia, Veronica Garcia, Danielle Dye, and Christopher Dye; and a great-grandson, Cash Robinson. John is predeceased by his brothers Edward, Bertum, Frederick, William, and Frankie Melvin, and a sister Ruth Gravell.
John’s family and friends are invited to celebrate his life at a funeral mass on Friday, February 9, at 11 AM, at St. Patrick’s Church, 118 S. Broadway, Lawrence. Arrangements have been thoughtfully handled by the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill.
John H. Melvin, Sr. will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of bravery, humor, dedication to family, country, and his 20-year commitment to the B&M Railroad will live on in our hearts forever.
