Haverhill – Leonard R. Barone, 78, passed away October 17, 2020 at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.
Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late Leonardo and Carma (Russo) Barone. Raised in Haverhill, he was a graduate of Haverhill High School and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Anselm’s College. Leonard was the former Police Chief for the City of Haverhill, coming up the ranks as Sergeant, Captain and eventually achieving Chief, a position he held for more than 10 years and on the force for over 35 years. Leonard’s favorite accomplishment in his police career was time spent creating and participating in the “Inner City Community” team where he played basketball with the inner city youth. He loved the beach and spent his winter months in Hollywood Beach, FL. Leonard also enjoyed the mountains and when younger was an avid skier. Known as a force to be reckoned with on the racquetball court, he could be found at Cedardale playing a sport he loved. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. Leonard was a devoted family man, spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who were his top priority and spent countless hours in pursuit of their smiles. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Leonard is survived by his children, Rebecca Murphy and her husband Patrick of Hilton Head Island, SC; Tony Barone and his wife Kathleen of Bradford; Leonard “Rugga” Barone and his fiancé` Aimee Ouellete of Gardner, KS; Geno Barone of Aventura, FL; Michael Barone of Aventura, FL; grandchildren, Bennet Murphy, Claudia Murphy, Estelle Murphy, Alexandra Barone and her partner Shamus Quirk, Jacqueline Barone and her partner Joseph Greenwood, Anthony L. Barone, Nina Barone and Anna Barone, Lillian Beattie and her husband Jacob and Connor Keohane; great grandchildren, Joseph A. Mario Greenwood, Axel R. Greenwood, Alinea I. Quirk and Olive E. Quirk; his former wife, Norma (Huberdeau) Barone and nephews Anthony Haugh and Christopher Haugh, niece Elizabeth Cena, nephew Adam Huberdeau. He was predeceased by his sister Kathleen Haugh Woodburn.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, November 4 from 4:00PM until 7:00PM at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00AM at Sacred Heart Parish, 165 South Main Street, Haverhill. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery, Mill Street, Haverhill.
