Newton, NH Norman Robert Phaneuf, only child of Lucien E. Phaneuf and Juliette A. (Dufour) Phaneuf; and stepson to Maria Louise Beauregard, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022. He was a father of seven children, a grandfather of eight grandchildren, and was lucky enough to see the first Great Grandchild in 2021
Norman was born in Haverhill, MA and grew up in French Canadian section of the city above Lafayette Square area of Haverhill. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School, Haverhill High School and graduated from Bentley College with a BS Degree in Accounting. Additionally, he spent 6 years in the National Guard.
Norman started his professional career as an accountant at the Stephen Mills Firm in Andover MA where he worked for a few years, before he joined the family business with his father, Phaneuf Insurance Agency, Inc., in Haverhill MA. Norman was involved in many civic and charitable organization, particularly the Lions Club of Haverhill; and over the years was a productive member of the Haverhill business community. He worked for over 30 years before retiring and transferring the business to his son, Peter Phaneuf. Norman then retired to Florida for over a decade, but returned to New England in 2018 to be closer to his family.
He married Mary Ann Farley (Haverhill) and they bought a home in Groveland MA where they raised their 7 children. He enjoyed his Groveland days with a close knit neighborhood crew including the Caseys, Courts, DiBurros, Whites, Levines, and many more. He built more relationships from his time at Cedardale Swim and Tennis Club, along with spending the summers at Salisbury Beach. He enjoyed being a coach and umpire for the Groveland little league team, Giants, where they had lots of wins followed by lots of trips to Carter Ice Cream.
He married two more time, first to Mary O’Brien where they lived and enjoyed over 20 years in the Hampton Beach, NH coastal area. And again to Michelle Turvey, where they lived for a few years in the St. Pete Beach, FL area.
Throughout his life, Norm had a diverse group of friends including Fitzy, Jack, Barry, Donnie, Greg, Lance, Dennis, Red, Lou from the gas station, and many more – they had many laughs and great times playing jokes on each other as well as traveling to many sporting events. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Haverhill Country Club, Abenaqui Country Club, along with several clubs along the gulf of Florida. Besides golf, his hobbies included tennis, racquet ball, playing cards, cribbage, and horses and dog racing (Derby Lane in FL and The Brooke in NH). Norm had a dry sense of humor and quick wit, and even a silliness, especially when he spent time with his grandchildren. He really enjoyed his time watching them playing in sports, or them conversing, playing or being rambunctious during our big family gatherings. Everyone called him “Norm” or ‘Frog” sometimes “storm’n norm’n”, but his favorite nickname was “Pepe.” He was truly an original and loved his family, who will sorely miss him!
He leaves behind his son Stephen Phaneuf and his partner Ladonna Maldonado of Salem, NH; his son Peter and Norma (Mercier) Phaneuf, of Haverhill MA; his son Kevin Phaneuf of Newton, NH; his daughter Jane Phaneuf of Newburyport, MA; his daughter Julie Phaneuf of Haverhill, MA; his son Joseph Phaneuf and his wife Ellen (Muldowney) Phaneuf of Milton MA, and his son Jeffrey Phaneuf of Newton, NH.
