Robert J. Stevens, 86, of Haverhill, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Hannah Duston Health Care Center in Haverhill, after a lengthy illness.Born in Cincinnati, he was the son of the late, Lancelot and Jeannette (Taylor) Stevens. He attended Cincinnati Public Schools and was a Graduate of Western Hills High School.A veteran of World War II, Mr. Stevens proudly served in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in the South Pacific and being involved in the Philippine Liberation, was then part of the Army of occupation in Japan, where he worked at headquarters under General McArthur. During his time in Japan he met the love of his life, an Army WAC, who would become his wife of almost 60 years, Louise H. (Rosso) Stevens.After the war, they settled and began raising their family in Cincinnati. He continued his education at Cincinnati University and earned a degree in engineering. He was employed by the Gulf Oil Company, servicing refineries. Moving to Haverhill in 1962, he along with his wife and family joined his father in law in the operation of the Hotel Whittier in downtown Haverhill, until the mid 1970s.For many years Robert was employed by manufacturing companies throughout the Boston area, including Wang Laboratories in Lowell, where he retired in1990 after fifteen years with the company. Mr. Stevens was a member of the North Bend Lodge 346 of A. F. And A.M. in Cleves, Ohio, for over 50 years. He enjoyed a variety of sports, and played high school football, he was a pit crew member in sprint car racing, and enjoyed traveling. He attended many Indianapolis 500 races. Musically talented, he played the piano, trumpet, guitar, and ukulele.He leaves his wife, Louise H. (Rosso) Stevens of Haverhill three sons, Charles R. Stevens, Robert W. and his wife Patricia E. (Cote) Stevens, and John L. Stevens, all of Haverhill three granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by a brother, Bruce Stevens.ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are respectfully invited to call on TODAY from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Kevin B.
