Shirley Ann (Hamel) Deitrick, 82, of Haverhill, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2011 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill after a brief illness.Born in Haverhill, she was the daughter of the late, Paul E. and Dorothy E. (Ross) Hamel. She attended Haverhill public schools and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1946. Primarily a homemaker most of her life, Shirley started her career in the Haverhill shoe industry. She then was employed as a dispatcher at a local Cab Company, and managed a local retail store.She moved to Los Angeles, California, where she lived for 15 years, later returning to Haverhill. Shirley was a kindhearted generous woman, well known to her community of friends and neighbors at the Judson House Apartment Complex in Haverhill. A friend of Bill W., she helped many people get back on track who were fighting life’s struggles. She will be sorely missed by all who came to know her.She leaves two sons, Harlan R. Cheney, Jr., and his wife, Mae, of Atkinson, N.H., Danny Gregoire, of, Florida six grandchildren, Gregg, Lisa, Garrett, and Keleigh Cheney, Melissa Gregoire, and Kenneth Gregoire and two great-grandchildren a sister, Joanne M. Liszewski, of Haverhill nephews, Stanley Liszewski and his wife Deborah, of Haverhill, Stephen P. Liszewski and his partner, Corey Hsu, of Lynn a niece, Dixie Hamel, of Marietta, Ga. and close friend and companion of five years, Elbert Chico Cathey, of Haverhill. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Hamel.ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are respectfully to attend her funeral service on Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m. in the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Route 125), Haverhill.
