Big enough to serve you, small enough to know you.
George Meletis, 87

George Meletis, 87

George Meletis of Haverhill, MA, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old.

Born on May 19, 1939, in Athens, Greece, George spent his early childhood in Elefsina, Greece, until he immigrated to the United States at the age of 15 in 1955. Through determination and hard work, George learned English, graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1960, and went on to earn an engineering degree from Lowell Technological Institute. He built a life defined by perseverance, generosity, and devotion to his family.

He shared 64 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Anastasia. Together they raised three children and created a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Family was always his greatest priority and joy, and everything he did was with their well-being in mind.

A talented handyman, there seemed to be no project he could not tackle. Whether he was building, repairing, plumbing, tiling, pouring concrete, or helping family with home improvement projects, he was happiest when using his skills to help others. He also enjoyed a long career in the textile industry, working at Malden Mills, Reid Meredith, and Loren Products, where he retired.

A lifelong history buff, he loved talking about history, politics, and sports with anyone willing to join the conversation. He enjoyed playing 45s and poker with his family, trying his luck with scratch tickets, and spending time with the family pets, who always seemed to know they had found a friend. No matter where he went, he was likely to run into someonehe knew; and if he did not know them when the conversation started, there was a good chance he would by the time it ended.

Above all, he adored his three grandchildren. Being a papou was his greatest joy in life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Anastasia (Diamond) Meletis; his children, John and his wife, Maureen, of Derry, NH, Christopher of Haverhill, MA, and Georgianne and her husband, Teddy, of Andover, MA; his cherished grandchildren, Samantha Ann Meletis and her fiancé, Noah Fandel, Alex Phillips, and Ana Phillips; his sister,Maria, and her husband,Minoli, of Elefsina, Greece; his sister-in-law, Harriet Cooper of Salem, NH; and his nieces, Rhonda Freitas and her husband, Steve, of Salem, NH, and Karen Kiriazis of Orchard Park, NY. George was predeceased by his two brothers, Meleti and Gerasimos, and his brother-in-law, Norman Cooper.

The family would like to thank the staff at Holy Family Hospital for the compassionate care they provided during his final days.

His family will remember him for his strength, his generous heart, and the unconditional love he gave them every day.

A private funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sts.
